EPL: Rooney kicks against Man United signing Messi, Ronaldo, Bale

Manchester United legend, Wayne Rooney, believes signing world class players in the stature of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi would not solve the Old Trafford outfit's problems.

What many are dubbing as the Solskjaer's "project" has already got underway, with Swansea winger Dan James joining the club for £15m once the worldwide transfer window opens next week.

"For Ole, I think the first thing he's got to do is try and build the squad", Rooney told BBC Radio Five Live.

United endured one of their most disappointing seasons to date this year, finishing sixth in the league and not coming close to challenging for any other silverware.

"I think he needs to try and look at maybe five or six players who have got potential to be top players but you're not spending £120m, £130m on these players".

"Ole's better spending £30-40m on players with potential and building the squad around those five or six players".

"You could bring in players in Ronaldo, Messi, Ramos or Bale but it's going to cost you £350million and you'd get two years out of them and you've written that money off".

Instead of splashing all of his cash on ready-made stars, the DC United forward thinks Solskjaer should continue to buy younger players to rebuild his squad. Many United fans will remember Wilson bursting into the first team scene all the way back in 2014 where he made his senior debut against Hull City and scored two goals in a 3-1 win, but since then his career has sort of fizzled out, with many unsuccessful loan spells to his name he was given another chance to redeem himself after signing for Aberdeen on loan this season, but unfortunately for him he only scored three goals in 11 starts. "But they need to be good enough and allow the manager to improve them".

The former England captain added: "I think the Man United fans will understand they're probably not going to compete for the Premier League next year".

The record time English champions are going through yet another rebuilding phase in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era as new manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has reportedly set some high profile recruitment targets.
