The Ferryman wins best play at the Tony Awards

The Tony Awards is broadcast live from NY on CBS starting at 8 pm EDT.

The best actor in a musical Tony went to Santino Fontana for "Tootsie", the hit show based on the 1982 movie, while Stephanie J. Block took home the lead actress award playing music legend Cher in "The Cher Show". Chavkin called for more inclusion among Broadway's ranks of stage directors and critics, adding: "There are so many women who are ready to go, there are so many artists of color who are ready to go".

The play's director Sam Mendes also picked up the best direction of a play award, his first directing Tony.

The 73rd Annual Tony Awards will again be hosted by James Corden and will celebrate the most impressive players on the stage scene on Sunday, June 9 at Radio City Music Hall in NY.

The victor for best play was "The Ferryman, " British playwright Jez Butterworth's sprawling epic about a farm family in Northern Ireland in 1981 endangered by the Irish Republican Army, which is determined to keep them silent about the murder of a family member.

Mart Crowley's The Boys in the Band was named best revival of a play, an idea from the TV mogul Ryan Murphy who is soon set to adapt the drama, about a group of gay men gathering for a birthday party, for Netflix.
