Motorcyclist killed by a bolt of lightning on Florida highway

A bolt of lightning struck a motorcyclist driving southbound on I-95 in Ormond Beach around 3 p.m. Sunday, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Officials said the man was killed at the scene.

According to ABC News, Florida troopers said an off-duty Virginia state trooper witnessed the lightning strike and aftermath from afar.

After the North Carolina man was struck in the head by lightning, his motorcycle ran off I-95 and overturned, and he was thrown "some distance", according to WSOC. He told law enforcement that he saw a bolt of lightning strike the man's helmet a second before the deadly crash.

The Florida Highway Patrol posted a photo of the 45-year-old man's damaged helmet, which appeared to be cracked and burned. Unfortunately he did not survive the crash, ' the agency tweeted.

The crash happened near mile marker 271 in Volusia County.

A North Carolina motorcyclist lost his life after he was fatally struck by lightning on Interstate 95 in Florida over the weekend.

The first occurred last month, when Bob Klemme, 48-years-old from Junction, TX, was struck by lightning while on a camping trip for the weekend.
