2 young children killed when drunk driver hits Amish buggy, police say

Friday's accident follows a crash last month when the driver of a black passenger auto struck a horse drawn carriage head on in California Township near the in border and then drove off.

Authorities say a pickup truck rear-ended an Amish horse-drawn carriage in southern MI, killing two children and seriously injuring two others and a woman who were in the carriage.

Michigan State Police say it happened on Kelly Rd, south of Lester Rd, in Algansee Township in Branch County sometime Friday.

Two children 6 and 2 years old were pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities say two other children, aged three and four, were taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The crash threw all seven people out of the carriage, five of whom were children. Michigan State Police told WXMI a 4-year old later died at the hospital from their injuries. Another child, age 3, also appeared to have major injuries, according to police, WWMT reported.

Police said the pickup driver was taken into custody, although they did not specify any charge.

The unnamed driver was intoxicated at the time of the accident, Price said.

This crash is still under investigation.
