Rafael Nadal beats Dominic Thiem to win record 12th French Open

Rafael Nadal beats Dominic Thiem to win record 12th French Open

Not for the first time however, Nadal was equal to the challenge, seeing off the break point and then responding well to hold to move within three games of victory.

Novak Djokovic was understandably frustrated after his 26 match win streak at the Grand Slam level ended on Saturday. She is the first teenager to reach the French Open final since Serbia's Ana Ivanovic in 2007.

Thiem faces 11-time French Open victor Rafael Nadal in the men's final for the second straight year.

With the victory, Nadal now has more Grand Slam wins at the French Open alone than nearly any other player has everywhere - more than Borg, more than Laver, more than Connors and Agassi and McEnroe.

"I played a really good match against him in Barcelona".

"It was an awesome match, my first five-set match at Roland Garros", Thiem said.

There is a big proviso: if you participate in the preview, you can't join a party or use Share Play with folks who aren't in it. In the Preview Program, parties that you are able to join will have an asterisk (*) in front of the Party name.

Lights will be installed on the four top show courts for next year's French Open and all courts the year after, putting an end to matches being suspended due to darkness.

Djokovic could have been lining up on the opposite half this afternoon had it not been for the brilliance of Thiem. But Thiem pinched the set after a couple of trademark backhands. Thiem hopes to win his third title of the year and his 14th title of his career overall.

With Nadal the overwhelming favourite, Thiem refuses to put too much pressure on his shoulders.

The win marks the first time anyone has won the same major tournament 12 times.

But whether Thiem can carry forward his momentum from his first ATP Masters 1000 title at Indian Wells, the tier of the tournament below the Grand Slams, is there to be seen.

"This is something I never dreamed about five, six, eight years ago, but it's happening today", said Nadal who has been written off numerous times in his career. If it is not hot and there is little wind, Thiem's power will come to the fore and Nadal's excessive spin, especially on the forehand, will be less effective. "That's our sport", said Thiem whose semi-final with Djokovic spanned a full 24 hours.
