Canadian women kidnapped at gunpoint in Ghana

The two women - students at Kumasi Technical University - were outside their apartment in the Ahodwo district in the country's second largest city of Kumasi around 8 p.m. when the gunmen grabbed them and bundled into a vehicle.

According to the Canadian news outlet CBC News, Global Affairs Canada (GAC), the department that handles Canada's diplomatic and consular relations, has confirmed earlier media reports of the kidnapping of Canadian citizens in Ghana.

Authorities in Ghana say two Canadians on an exchange program have been abducted.

Two Canadian women working for a local aid agency were kidnapped at a golf club in central Ghana this week, the police said on Thursday. They said they have been in contact with the families of the two women.

The group focuses on sending youth volunteers to various parts of the world to undertake and support educational, organizational development, health and wellness initiatives.

The woman who answered the Ghana Police Service press telephone number told the Post "we don't have any information right now".

Kidnapping for ransom is common across West Africa. In April, an Indian businessman was abducted at gunpoint in Kumasi and a ransom demanded.

"But we have not known it in this country and we need to do something about it to make sure that it doesn't become a feature of our society", President Nana Akufo-Addo said.

Umpakan Chodri was later rescued at Parkoso in the Asokore-Mampong Municipality by a team of police officers.

Tourism is an important industry for Ghana, and Kumasi, the historic capital of the Ashanti kingdom, is a favourite destination.

It has always been seen as a bulwark of stability in a region struggling to contain multiple groups of Islamist fighters.
