Google Maps gets on-screen speed display in navigation mode

Google is bringing some major new features to its Maps app on iOS, Android, and the web.

These features include Bus travel times from live traffic in 10 of the largest cities in India, live train status for Indian Railways trains, and mixed-mode commute suggestions that now combine auto-rickshaw and public transport. So, a user can find out in real-time how long their bus journey will take depending on traffic conditions.

The feature uses Google's live traffic data and public bus schedules to calculate delays and provide accurate travel times.

For hurricanes, Google Maps will display a forecast cone which will show the hurricane's projected trajectory, with information on the times it's expected to hit certain areas. "This feature is launching in Delhi, Bangalore, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Pune, Lucknow, Chennai, Mysore, Coimbatore, and Surat", Google wrote in its blog. Users can get live updates about a train by entering the starting location and destination, or their starting station and destination, to see a list of trains taking the route. This is a pretty good addition to the other features that they've adapted from the also-Google-owned Waze app. And from there, a person can view live train running status.

Since the availability of seats remains to be another common challenge with train journeys, we hope Google incorporates the information within the feature to help users make better decisions while planning their train journeys using Google Maps.

Aside from not being available on Android Auto yet, this new Google Maps feature is rolling out to users in limited markets rather slowly.

The mixed-mode directions results now take into account auto-rickshaws - a popular type of transport in India. You can also see the rickshaw meter estimate, and departure times for your transit connection. However, this feature is only launched in Delhi and Bangalore initially and will eventually spread to more cities.
