Rosenthal later clarified that the contract is a three-year deal worth close to $45 million.

Rosenthal reported earlier today that the Cubs were "pushing hard" for free agent closer Craig Kimbrel, and there must have been just a few details to work out - because now it's reportedly happening.

The veteran right-hander tallied 42 saves in 2018 with a 2.74 ERA.

Although Bryce Harper and Manny Machado understandably where the headliners of Major League Baseball free agency this past winter, the crop of players on the open market also included notable pitchers Craig Kimbrel and Dallas Keuchel. Kimbrel will receive $10 million this year, and $16 million in both 2020 and 2021. He remains out of the lineup on personal leave in which he's not being paid, meaning the Cubs could use that money to sign Kimbrel.

Brandon Morrow, who was signed to be the closer previous year, has not pitched since last July 15 due to injuries.

His addition is a boost to a Cubs bullpen that has struggled this season while blowing 11 save opportunities.

With Ben Zobrist on the restricted list as a result of ongoing divorce proceedings, Chicago could end up having more than $9 million in available payroll.

The Cubs go into Wednesday's game with 33-26 record that had them percentage points ahead of the Brewers in the NL Central.
