Young Texas couple die from unidentified illness in Fiji

Although they were provided medical treatment as the standard of care, their illnesses progressively worsened and despite best efforts - they died within a few days of each other.

The family said that the healthy and active couple came down with a mysterious illness.

"The Embassy has facilitated contact between the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Fiji's Ministry of Health to ascertain the causes of death and to assist in any related measures".

A Fort Worth couple died while on vacation in Fiji.

"Very physically fit", Calanog recalled to KVUE of Michelle, a former student-athlete, and David, an Air Force veteran, who were expected to return home from their trip just one day later.

Calanog said the couple loved to travel and had been organizing the Fiji trip for some time: "They were planning an wonderful vacation", she said.

"They were planning an awesome vacation", Calanog told KVUE.

A criminal inquiry has been launched into the explosions, on suspicion of a breach of industrial safety rules. At a different armament factory in Dzerzhinsk , five people died in August previous year in an explosion .

Lockheed Martin spokesman Kenneth Ross confirmed with the Fort Worth Star Telegram their bodies have not been transferred to the United States yet and the company is "working with the family" to determine how to "support repatriating them".

A US Department of State official confirmed the travelers' deaths and offered condolences to their family. The couple had a 2-year-old son and David Paul had a daughter from a previous relationship, according to the station.

She said the couple's children were with relatives.

"We are incredibly grateful for everyone that came together and helped locate Zooey", she told the outlet.

While their families have been told that they died, they remain in the dark about what caused their sudden deterioration of health.

Calanog added that the remains of the couple, who leave behind two young children, can not be returned to the United States until a cause of death is determined.

"We know that Michelle and David are with us in Zooey", Calanog said, reported ABC 7.
