Liverpool hero Barnes: Van Dijk only man worthy of Ballon D'Or

"We're going to try next season again, and hopefully we'll be as close or even better next year".

PFA Player of the Year Van Dijk has cemented his status as one of the world's best defenders this season, and Barnes believes he would be a worthy victor when the Ballon d'Or is awarded later in the year.

"Van Dijk was offered a lot more money to go to Man City and a lot more money to go to Chelsea, yet he chose to go to Liverpool and there's a reason for that, that's the manager".

The Reds failed to beat Real Madrid in the Champions League final past year but kicked on after the painful defeat.

"But there haven't been any of those types of players who have really set the world alight this season".

The Dutchman was integral to Liverpool's Champions League final triumph, which included beating Lionel Messi's Barcelona in the semi-finals.

He told a post-match press conference: "In the second half we were sitting back a bit and they put pressure on us, but overall I think we're deserved Champions League winners".
