Broncos GM John Elway posts tribute to late Packers QB Bart Starr

Green Bay Packers football legend Bart Starr, who quarterbacked the team to five NFL championships including wins in Super Bowl I and II, died on Sunday in Birmingham, Alabama at 85, the team announced Sunday.

"We are saddened to note the passing of our husband, father, grandfather, and friend, Bart Starr", his family said in statement.

Starr, who played for the Packers from 1956-71, previously suffered two heart attacks and a serious stroke in 2014.

The Packers are now scheduled to play in three of the league's "NFL100 Game of Week" matchups.

Starr is known widely for one particular performance, in the National Football League championship game many call the most storied-ever Packers victory.

"Along with being a Pro Football Hall of Famer and among a small pantheon of Packers' all-time greats, he was the franchise's nonpareil role model in the eyes of many", the team's statement read, in part.

After his incredible 16-year career as a player came to an end, Starr became the Packers quarterbacks coach, and then the head coach three years later.

Iconic former Green Bay Packers quarterback Bart Starr died on Sunday in Birmingham, Alabama. Starr ran a quarterback sneak, tumbling into the end zone to secure his team's third straight title. "I was just basically an extension of Bart Starr on the field". He is survived by his wife, Cherry, who he married in 1954, and another son, Bart Jr. Bart Starr auctioned his 1967 Super Bowl MVP Corvette to help cover the costs of starting the non-profit that helps at-risk young people. The Packers were playing the Dallas Cowboys. The next year, his playing time was limited by a back injury and Drew was sacked.

Blizzard has announced the new Replay feature, which, as you can likely guess, will allow players to relive their past matches. You can also place (and bookmark) static cameras if you want to watch the same spot across multiple games.

But Starr surprised the Green Bay coach and the 49ers defense. He battled with courage and determination to transcend the serious stroke he suffered in September 2014.

No. 15 played with the Packers until his retirement in 1971.

During his athletic career, Starr won two Super Bowls and was named MVP in both games.

In another treasured moment in Packers history, Starr rode a golf cart from the stadium's tunnel in a steady rain to center stage where he greeted and embraced Favre in a moment that no doubt brought cheer, chills and tears to many in the crowd of almost 80,000.

"Bart was always the epitome of class", Hunter said. He found his greatness under the leadership of Vince Lombardi. "That's exactly what I did that day".

My condolences to the Starr family and the entire Packers nation on the loss of this fine man.

The couple dealt with tragedy in 1988 when their son Brett died at 24 due to complications from cocaine addiction.
