The social media giant had previously confirmed plans for monetization and has now announced that WhatsApp ads will start rolling out in 2020.

Meanwhile, the introduction of ads in WhatsApp could generate a new wave of user migration from Facebook's messaging app to alternative solutions like Telegram.

Back in January previous year, Facebook made the headlines for testing the feature to share Instagram Stories as WhatsApp Status updates. Similar to the current Status posts, the ads will take up the entire screen and the name of the company will be displayed on top. The social media giant has built an empire valued at almost $500 billion on the back of strong advertising revenues and with WhatsApp, it will complete the trifecta of services that show advertisements. You would also be able to add other users to your contact list by scanning their QR codes using the Camera feature on your WhatsApp. WhatsApp beta version 2.18.305 for Android was reported to have included the implementation of ads in the Status section. Also, there will be a swipe up feature to reach link for shopping. It's unclear presently if Facebook has any further designs for ads inside WhatsApp.

Messaging app WhatsApp has been providing its services for free to its 1.5 billion users spread over 180 countries.

WhatsApp Status debuted in 2017 and functions remarkably similarly to Snapchat Stories and Instagram Stories; users are able to upload photos or video that will disappear after 24 hours. The company is planning to make Business app richer with Image + text and PDF + text format. Facebook wants users to not only message businesses but also see their product catalog and see products before placing order.
