Michigan Offers Head Coaching Job to Juwan Howard, Two Sides in Talks

Juwan Howard is coming back to MI.

"Juwan is an absolute star as a person, player and coach", Spoelstra said, via the Miami Herald. "I feel he is more than ready". He'd been on Erik Spoelstra's staff since retiring from his 19-year playing career in 2013 and was one of the candidates for the Lakers' head coaching job this offseason.

Juwan Howard didn't win an NCAA title with the Wolverines during his playing days in the early 1990's, but he did play on two World Championship teams during his 19-year National Basketball Association career. "It was always going to take something incredibly special to for me to leave Miami", he said.

Howard met with MI officials earlier this week, sources said, and became the front-runner once Providence's Ed Cooley withdrew from consideration and announced he was returning to the Friars.

Howard says he's excited about returning to Ann Arbor.

Beilein left to take the head coaching job with the Cleveland Cavaliers this spring.

"I think it is a great step forward for him and the University", Riley said, "and I wish him nothing but the best, because that's what he's given us". Howard joined the Heat's staff in 2014 after a 19-year career in the National Basketball Association. He averaged 15.3 points and 7.5 rebounds per game with a reputation for great defensive play.

Juwan Howard played in the NCAA championship final game in 1992 and 1993.

Howard was the first member of the Fab Five to commit to play at MI and he later recruited Webber, Rose, King and Jackson to join him. The Wolverines also won two Big Ten season championships - accomplishments the Fab Five never achieved - along with a pair of conference tournament titles while becoming the school's all-time winningest coach.
