Roger Federer to face Lorenzo Sonego in first round of French Open

Throw in a heavy defeat to Djokovic in the Australian Open final and you could be forgiven for thinking that Nadal will struggle to maintain his rule over Paris.

Rafael Nadal is chasing a 12th title in Paris while 2009 champion Roger Federer is playing in the French Open for the first time since 2015.

Making a comeback on his beloved clay in Monte Carlo, Nadal suffered the semi-final loss to Fabio Fognini after one of his worst performances on clay since 2005, heading to Barcelona where Dominic Thiem ousted him 6-4, 6-4, overpowering the great rival who lost the crown at another event that he won 11 times in the past.

"It was very important for me to play well in Rome, I hope it's a good sign for Roland Garros", the Spaniard, who could face Japanese Kei Nishikori in the last eight, added.

The French Open begins on Sunday with live daily coverage on Eurosport and the Eurosport Player.

Simona Halep returns to Paris to defend her title on the women's side while youngster Naomi Osaka-who is seeking a third straight Grand Slam win after victories in the US and Australian Opens-Petra Kvitova and Kiki Bertens are among atop the board behind Halep.

That said, Del Potro pushed Novak Djokovic all the way in a thrilling Italian Open quarter-final last week, and was a semi-finalist at Roland Garros a year ago, as well as in 2009.

If the seedings work out for the quarter-finals, then 15-time major victor Djokovic would face Germany's Alexander Zverev who has still to get past the last eight at a Slam. She will take on Vitalia Diatchenko in the first round.
