The company that operates the 984-foot-tall tower, which just celebrated its 130th anniversary, said it was standard procedure to evacuate the tower under the circumstances.

A statement posted to the official Eiffel Tower Twitter account said: "The tourEiffel is now closed until further notice". A rescuer dressed in red could be seen above him.

It wasn't immediately clear why the man had attempted to climb the tower or how he got past the monument's security.

Police do not yet know why he began his ascent up the iron beams, a source told AFP.

A man who climbed the Eiffel Tower on Monday was taken into custody by police after reaching the top.

Images on social media indicate that he has reached the observation deck that is near the top of the tower.
