United Nations concerned about rising US-Iran rhetoric

Al Jazeera's James Bays, reporting from the United Nations headquarters in NY, said the Iranian ambassador did not mention the U.S. in his appeal for dialogue.

The past few weeks have seen Trump changing his stance on the possibility of a full-fledged armed conflict with Iran.

In a Fox News interview on Sunday, Trump said he was not seeking a conflict with Iran vowed not to let it develop nuclear weapons.

Trump's comment came just hours after a Katyusha rocket fell in Baghdad's Green Zone, about 1.5 kilometers from the U.S. Embassy. There is no evidence that Iran-backed forces were behind the attack, despite reported "suspicions" from Western diplomats.

"We want peace and stability in the region, but we won't stand with our hands bound as the Iranians continuously attack".

As military tensions between the USA and Iran appeared to be gradually cooling despite unsafe provocations from the White House, President Donald Trump-who said publicly last week that he hopes there is not another war in the Middle East-took to Twitter Sunday to threaten "the official end of Iran", a remark numerous critics condemned as "genocidal". It has been filmed by the U.S. Navy on Friday carrying out exercises with other American warships in the Arabian Sea, which is over 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) away.

However, Britain's foreign minister reiterated the Trump administration is only attempting to hold Iran responsible for its recent aggression and is not looking for a full-scale war.

Most recently, three mortar bombs rocked the Green Zone in September 2018 and the USA government also blamed that attack, which also caused no casualties, on Iranian-backed militias.

OPEC and non-OPEC oil producers have production cuts in place, but the group of exporters is not expected to make its decision on output until late June, when they meet again in Vienna. "If the Iranian threats against American personnel and interests are activated we must deliver an overwhelming military response", Graham tweeted.

Pragya's candidature was 'satyagrah' against 'saffron terror': Shah
Narsimha Rao told reporters at the party headquarters in Delhi. "Those calling him a terrorist should instead look at themselves". Clearly unhappy with Thakur's controversial comment in midst of elections, the BJP immediately condemned it.

The attack comes amid heightened tensions in the Persian Gulf, with Saudi Arabia accusing Tehran of being behind a recent drone strike led by Iran-backed rebels that disrupted a key Saudi oil pipeline.

The amount of low-enriched uranium Iran can produce was capped at 300 kilos under the 2015 deal to curb its nuclear programme in exchange for sanctions relief.

Saudi Arabia's Sunni Muslim ally the UAE has not blamed anyone for the tanker sabotage operation, pending an investigation. Tehran long has insisted it does not seek nuclear weapons, though the West fears its program could allow it to build them. He said that the military was investigating the cause but that the rocket was believed to have been fired from east Baghdad.

United Nations officials are holding contacts with the U.S. and Iran at various levels to try to calm the situation, said Dujarric, but he did not provide details of those talks.

May 9: The European Union urges Iran to respect the nuclear deal and says it plans to continue trading with the country despite US sanctions. "Iran has to understand that", al-Jubeir said. More recently, Trump has tightened economic sanctions against the Tehran regime and his administration says it has built up the United States military presence in the region.

In the meantime, Oman's Foreign Minister Rushed to Tehran Monday morning May 20 apparently in a bid to help ease the rising tensions between Tehran and DC.

The kingdom's regional allies welcomed the Saudi invitation. "The ball is in Iran's court".

"So going to war with Iran?"

Both the semi-official Fars and Tasnim news agencies reported on the increased production of enriched uranium.
