Philadelphia Eagles Defensive End and Social Justice Activist Chris Long, Announces Retirement

Winning a second consecutive Super Bowl crown - as well as helping the Eagles capture their first ever Lombardi Trophy - after eight seasons of missing out on the postseason was special, but Long did something that year that no National Football League player had ever done.

After lingering on the free agent market following the Super Bowl-winning season, Long joined the Eagles on March 30, 2017.

A year earlier, the defensive ace had been a member of the Patriots team which overturned a 28-3 deficit against the Atlanta Falcons in the greatest comeback in Super Bowl history.

"Cheers. Been a hell of a journey", Long wrote on Twitter. "Eleven years and I can honestly say I put my soul into every minute of it", Long said. I've seen them both and I appreciate the perspective. On Saturday night, the Eagles thanked Long for his service.

The former Virginia Cavalier played 11 seasons with the Rams, Patriots, and Eagles, before calling it quits.

In 2017 he donated his entire base salary, worth $1 million, to charities which promote educational equality in the three cities where he spent his career - St. Louis, Philadelphia and Boston.

It looks like Chris Long is walking away.

"It just showed how much we could make changes in things that matter, and play really good football too".

It's providing a solid amount of offseason entertainment for Patriots fans who still have many more months to wait before the six-time Super Bowl champion gets back on the field for his first meaningful game action post-Super Bowl LIII.

Following the win over Atlanta, Long's social activism first became noticed by the at-large public when he made a decision to skip the Patriots visit to the White House.
