Bernie Sanders brings 'us, not me' campaign message to Alabama church

President Donald Trump will hold a campaign rally in Pennsylvania Monday, just days after former Vice President Joe Biden officially kicked off his presidential bid as both make a play for a critical state.

His party may be enraged by Donald Trump's presidency, but Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden insisted Saturday that Democrats will not defeat the Republican president if they pick an angry nominee.

"Some of the really smart folks say Democrats don't want to hear about unity", he said. "That's what they are saying to have to do to win the Democratic nomination. Well, I don't believe it", he said.

If nominated, Biden will be pitted against incumbent Trump, 72, for the November 3, 2020 presidential elections. But Biden, 76, has opened up a more than 20-point lead over his nearest rival, U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders, in several public opinion polls.

Referencing the health care fight under former President Barack Obama, he noted Saturday that he knows how to win "a bare-knuckle fight", but later added, "We need to stop fighting and start fixing".

"President Trump will be returning to Pennsylvania to share his long litany of achievements on behalf of the American people", said Michael Glassner, chief operating officer of the president's reelection campaign. "That's why I'm here".

He said a theme for his campaign is "us, not me" and then told the crowd what he meant.

Sanders has indeed sunk far beneath Joe Biden in the polls. He can take the wins Obama had but he also needs to take those losses.

The President will speak with supporters at a rally in the central part of Pennsylvania, with Biden holding an event in the Democratic-stronghold of Philadelphia.

A fundraising memo sent to members after the rally accused Biden of trying to splinter the party. "China wants Sleepy Joe BADLY!"

The rally, which was announced the same day Biden officially entered the race in April, will focus on his vision for "for unifying America with respected leadership on the world stage - and dignified leadership at home", according to a press release from the campaign, and is seen as an unofficial bookend to the campaign launch.

The President's challenges in Rust Belt states, critical to his narrow 2016 victory, are at the forefront of advisers' minds. "Sleepy Joe Biden is pulling ahead and think about it, I'm only here because of Sleepy Joe and the man who took him off the 1% trash heap, President O!"

In recent weeks, he has been criticised by Senator Kamala Harris for his past support for the 1994 crime bill that critics say led to mass incarceration of African-Americans, by Sanders for his support of the North American Free Trade Agreement, and by Senator Elizabeth Warren for his ties to the credit-card industry.

With Biden the clear front-runner, those attacks are likely to intensify.
