Spieth shuts down grand slam talk at PGA Championship

Brooks Koepka said his "tunnel-vision focus" was key to his success in major tournaments as he held onto his record seven-stroke lead going into Sunday's final round of the PGA Championship.

PGA Championship ticket prices plunged to their lowest level in at least four years on Thursday, even with Tiger Woods eying a 16th major victory in his first event since winning the Masters.

Of those who have completed their second rounds at the Long Island course in NY state, three-time major victor Jordan Spieth shot a four-under 66 to set the clubhouse target on five under, still two behind Koepka.

Woods double-bogeyed his first hole (the 10th), before playing the rest of his round in level par, shooting a two-over-par 72 in round one of the PGA Championship.

Koepka is defending a Major for the second time - he did it successfully at the US Open previous year. He's won three of the last eight majors dating back to the 2017 U.S. Open at Erin Hills.

Brooks Koepka and Tiger Woods with the big galleries at Bethpage today. "When I had a few opportunities there with short irons, I played aggressively and was able to get them in there where I had makeable putts, and otherwise 30, 40 feet away and move on".

Taking advantage of the relatively easy early stretch, he plundered birdies at three of the first four holes, before parring to the turn to be 10 under par for the tournament and bogey-free through 27 holes.

"This golf course you can't (force it)".

"I felt like I was getting back into the round", Woods said of his eagle.

Fifteen-time Major champion Tiger Woods and four-time Major victor Rory McIlroy both struggled to a two-over 72s for a share of 51st place.

There were no end-of-regulation heroics this time for Toronto as Siakam missed on a long jumper to send the game into overtime. Siakam scored eight points in the third but the Raptors made six turnovers, leading to nine points for the Bucks .

From one of Bethpage's toughest tees, Woods missed the fairway and found the rough, hit a layup then went over the green and chipped to six feet.

The 43-year-old U.S. superstar opened with a double bogey at 10, added another at the par-3 17th and despite a 30-foot eagle putt at the par-5 fourth was unable to challenge Koepka after bogeys on three of the next four holes.

"It was great that Tiger won Augusta, but we're at a new week now", Koepka said.

Only a closing birdie after a stunning approach spared him the blushes of having gained no shots on the day, but it didn't spare him the blushes of being well out of touch after 18 holes.

Dustin Johnson is ranked the No. 1 golfer in the world.

"It only leaves you with a few more", he reasoned, "and you just have to beat those guys".

"Whenever I hit it on the fairway I gave it a good look for birdie and made those putts today", said the world number 119, who is playing with new-found confidence after working on his driving distance.

"When that putt went in on No. 10, that was kind of the momentum that set me", Koepka said.

"I'm definitely not going to let up, I promise you that", he said after posting a 12-under 198 total.
