India election 2019: Exit polls suggest Narendra Modi back as PM

Though media reports say Modi is visiting the Kedarnath and Badrinath shrines to seek blessings of Lord Shiva ahead of the results of the 2019 Lok Sabha Elections on May 23, 2019, sources said the objective of this visit of the prime minister is spiritual.

Modi announced that the "Master Plan" for the Kedarnath Temple was "ready" and he also addressed the public and the media at Kedarnath, O'Brien alleged.

With 3 out of 4 of the polls indicating a clear majority for Modi's alliance, Indian equity markets are expected to rally sharply on Monday, while the Indian rupee is also likely to strengthen versus the United States dollar, according to market participants. "God has given us capacity to give and not demand", the PM said.

Mr Modi yesterday offered prayers at the Kedarnath.

Referring to the ongoing development works at the temple town, Modi said development should be a mission in which nature, environment and tourism should not be affected.

Security has been tightened around both the shrines in view of the Prime Minister's visit, said Ashok Kumar, Director General (Law and Order).

Though Modi's visit to Kedarnath was described as "just a spiritual" trip by the local BJP unit, the widespread media coverage and heightened security suggested otherwise. Is this not a way to directly and indirectly influence voters ahead of polls?

Besides, Naidu also noted the dissent expressed by Election Commissioner Ashok Lavasa over clean chits given to Modi and BJP president Amit Shah over allegations of poll code violations.

The prime minister offered prayers at the Himalayan shrine on Sunday morning.

Fake news and doctored images abounded, including of Gandhi and Modi having lunch with Imran Khan, prime minister of arch-rival Pakistan, as well as an image purporting to show Rahul's sister Priyanka intoxicated.

Later in the day, he is expected to be in Badrinath, another temple in Uttarakhand's "char dham" religious circuit. Draped in a saffron shawl, Modi was seen meditating at the holy cave. Similarly, the gates of Badrinath were opened at 4:15 am on May 10 while the gates of the famous Kedarnath shrine located in Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand were thrown open for pilgrims in the presence of priests at 6.15 am on May 9 after six months of winter break.
