Vladimir Putin Says Wants To "Fully Restore" Russia-US Ties

Vladimir Putin Says Wants To

Pompeo stated, "We are looking for Iran to behave like a normal country, and we have applied pressure to the leadership of the Islamic Republic of Iran to achieve that".

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday meets US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in the highest-level talks between the rival powers in almost a year as they see if they can make headway on a raft of disagreements from Venezuela to Iran to arms control.

"The talks were open and useful".

"For our part, we have repeatedly said that we would also like to restore the relationship in full format".

Commenting on U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's statement that Moscow and Washington can cooperate in solving key problems, he pointed out that these are just common words for now.

Lavrov said Russian Federation is hoping for a positive response from the United States about extending the New START arms control treaty, which is due to expire in 2021, "but we really have some concerns which are related to the re-equipping of launchers of Trident submarines and heavy bombers announced by the United States".

Addressing the recent escalation around Iran, Putin lamented the collapse of the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, also known as the Iran nuclear deal.

"Bu the fact that we speak on this topic, and we will continue to speak".

The two also differed on the issue of Venezuela, too.

"Democracy is not established by force".

But Lavrov flatly rejected the request, denouncing USA and opposition "threats" against the Maduro government. Given, however, the demonstrated inability of this American administration to seek win-win solutions with its nominal allies, there might be no alternative way for Europe to assert its interests.

Another proposal was to create a bilateral business council, uniting the representatives of the commerce communities of the two countries.

In a late-night encounter in Putin's forested dacha in the Black Sea resort of Sochi, Pompeo became the highest-ranking American to meet the Russian leader in 10 months.

"I am eagerly waiting for today's negotiations with Vladimir Putin".

Europe on Monday (13 May) urged the U.S. not to further escalate tensions over the Iran nuclear deal, with Britain issuing a stark warning of the risk of conflict erupting "by accident" in the Gulf.

The offensive threatens to unleash a major humanitarian catastrophe with 180,000 civilians already being forced to flee their homes in the last two weeks.

Both the United States and Russian Federation hope to make some progress on arms control, with Moscow seeking a five-year extension of the New START treaty, which caps the number of nuclear warheads well below Cold War limits and is set to expire in 2021.

"I've formed the impression that your president wants to fix Russia-U.S. ties and contacts and wants to solve issues which are of common interest for us", Putin told Pompeo.

Following his meeting with the Austrian president, Vladimir Putin told reporters that the United States has been attempting to derail certain projects involving Russian Federation, including Nord Stream 2, and weighed in on the escalating situation around the crumbling Iran nuclear deal.

"You mentioned Ukraine. Look, we have different views on how Ukraine ought to proceed", Pompeo said at a meeting with journalists, the transcript of which was published by the U.S. Department of State.

Brian Hook, the U.S. special envoy for Iran, insisted the Islamic republic was itself an "escalating threat".

"We've said this not only about the Russians but about other countries as well", Pompeo added.
