The other suspect is listed in court records as 16-year-old Maya McKinney, The Associated Press reported.

Witnesses have said 18-year-old student Kendrick Castillo was killed after charging at one of the shooters and pinning him to the wall.

McKinney is now being held on suspicion of murder and attempted murder, and is legally old enough to be tried as an adult in Colorado, though District Attorney George Brauchler has yet to decide whether to file adult charges.

Douglas County District Judge Theresa Slade, who presided over both proceedings, ordered the two suspects to remain held without bond pending their next court hearings, set for Friday, when formal charges are expected to be filed. Colorado law permits prosecutors to file adult charges of serious felonies against 16- and 17-year-olds without prior approval from a judge.

The school's security was put in the spotlight following a May 7 shooting that left one student dead and eight others wounded.

School authorities informed the police as soon as the incident unfolded, and students were immediately evacuated to a safer area.

The message continued, "I have a client that wished me to reach out and extend an offer for him to pay for any and all funeral expenses, as well as establish a scholarship in his name". The two schools are separated by about 7 miles south of Denver.

In March, Carter became the oldest-living former president in U.S. history, having survived a bout with cancer in recent years. He received his first radiation treatment at age 90, and four months later, he was - remarkably - cancer free.

The White House issued the following statement about the shooting: 'Our prayers are with the victims, family members, and all those affected by today's shooting at STEM School Highlands Ranch in Littleton, Colorado.

"We're going to hear about very heroic things that have taken place at the school", Douglas County Sheriff Tony Spurlock said Wednesday.

The school said it conducted an investigation, which included informing 2,800 parents of the allegations "in the hopes" that somebody would "confidentially" come forward with information. "But at least it's a moment to recognize how courageous Kendrick was", said Deese, after leading a prayer at the park.

Spurlock said officers engaged the suspects and there was a struggle to bring them down.

A former Marine working as a private security guard may have fired on a sheriff's deputy amid the chaos of the Colorado school shooting this week, the Denver Post reports, citing a law enforcement source. Two young suspects, echoing the Columbine High School massacre 20 years ago, are alleged to have killed one and injured eight. Two high school students used at least two handguns in a fatal shooting on Tuesday at the charter school, authorities said Wednesday.

"We also request placement of a new SRO for the 2018-19 school year and participation in his or her selection process", Eucker wrote in an email to the sheriff's office and Bronner on May 18, 2018. Highlands Ranch has become our home.
