Barr launches new inquiry into origins of Russian Federation probe

The president commented on the news as he left the White House for a trip to Louisiana.

The attorney-general has been accused of pandering to repeated claims by Mr Trump that his predecessor had a spy illegally placed into his campaign and that the Mueller investigation was politically motivated.

"Fox News reported on Monday that Attorney General Bill Barr had assigned John Durham, the USA attorney in CT, to conduct the inquiry into alleged misconduct and alleged improper government surveillance on the Trump campaign during the 2016 presidential election, as well as whether Democrats were the ones who improperly colluded with foreign actors", reports Fox News.

Trump told reporters Tuesday it was "a great thing" that Barr opened the inquiry but said he did not ask Barr to investigate the matter.

Durham's appointment comes about a month after Barr told members of Congress he believed "spying did occur" on the Trump campaign in 2016. "I think it's great".

Barr provided no details about what "spying" may have taken place but appeared to be alluding to a surveillance warrant the FBI obtained on a former Trump associate, Carter Page, and the FBI's use of an informant while the bureau was investigating former Trump campaign foreign policy adviser George Papadopoulos.

Conway's other most memorable recurring characters included an elderly man whose shuffling pace always caused trouble and Mr. Conway died Tuesday morning after a long illness in Los Angeles, according to Howard Bragman, who heads LaBrea Media.

"Well I didn't understand his answer because I thought the attorney general answered it perfectly", Trump said, adding that Wray's response to lawmakers was "ridiculous".

With the appointment, Barr is addressing a rallying cry of President Donald Trump and his supporters, who have accused the Justice Department and Federal Bureau of Investigation of unlawfully spying on his campaign.

"It was the greatest hoax ever perpetrated on the people of this country, and you know what, I am so proud of our attorney general, that he is looking into it", he said Tuesday.

The newspaper noted that the inquiry is the third publicly known investigation focused on the FBI's counterintelligence probe of the Trump campaign.

When Attorney General Jeff Sessions named Huber to investigate a host of GOP concerns, he said the USA attorney would be working "in cooperation" with the inspector general, but some people who have been interviewed by investigators with the inspector general's office have seen no obvious indication of Huber's involvement, people familiar with the matter said.
