The opposition said Mr Maduro had stacked the court with his own supporters.

The US has imposed restrictions on two companies, involved in oil trade between Caracas and Havana, as well as threatened Venezuelan security services with sanctions over their continuous support to President Nicolas Maduro.

The head of the Venezuelan National Assembly, Mr Guaido, who on January 23 proclaimed himself interim president of the country in a bid to lead it to fresh elections and end Mr Maduro's Government, branded the arrest "kidnapping".

Venezuela's opposition leader and self-proclaimed president Juan Guaido on Friday said that a countrywide protest will take place against his deputy Edgar Zambrano's arrest, terming it as an "unlawful incident."We are fighting a regime that armed the paramilitary groups, but this will not stop us".

Edgar Zambrano, deputy speaker of the opposition-majority National Assembly, is being held in preventive detention for "the flagrant commission of the crimes of treason, conspiracy and civil rebellion", the Supreme Court said in a statement announcing the verdict of a lower court. The European Union and several Latin American states echoed his criticism while the U.S. called for his immediate release.

"We, democrats, remain on our feet to fight".

'The Second Special Court of First Instance in Control Function, with jurisdiction in cases related to terrorism, also agreed that the investigation should continue by ordinary procedure and designated Zambrano, the headquarters of the Military Police, located in Fuerte Tiuna, as the center of judicial deprivation, ' according to the information from the Supreme Court of Justice.

On 30 April, Guaido urged Venezuelan civilians and servicemen to take to the streets to help depose constitutionally-elected Maduro.
