Los Angeles County identifies additional case of measles

However, the Ministry of Health and Wellness continues to recommend to persons not immunized against the disease to visit the polyclinic in their catchment area or their private doctor, to receive the measles/mumps/rubella (MMR) vaccine. With the disease on the rise worldwide, even adults who have received a dose of the MMR vaccine are at risk, especially if they regularly travel or are planning to travel overseas. She explained that a person can pick up the virus from touching the exposed germ that has been on counter tops and surfaces for up to two hours, as well as through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes as far as six feet away. For every 1,000 people diagnosed with measles, one to two people will die.

The Centers for Disease Control confirmed 704 measles cases since the start of 2019, the highest number since 1994, and the agency is urging parents to have their children vaccinated, and for those traveling overseas to make sure they are immunized.

The Commissioner said in a web statement, 'a child should get a measles vaccine on or after their 1st birthday. At first, symptoms can include a fever, sore throat and runny nose before advancing to a red blotchy skin rash and eye inflammation. Patients may also have small white spots on the inside of the mouth.

The vast majority of cases have occurred in children who have not received the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine, and public health officials are working to ensure immunization. They believe the outbreaks are due to people traveling to other countries with significant outbreaks, including Israel, the Philippines and Ukraine, and then coming back to the US and infecting people in areas with low vaccination rates.
