Ugandan pop star opposition MP placed under house arrest

Ugandan pop star opposition MP placed under house arrest

The country's Supreme Court last week upheld a decision to remove an age cap of 75 for presidential contenders, paving the way for Museveni to run again in 2021.

News of Bobi Wine's arrest was confirmed by a handler of his Twitter account, who said the youthful legislator had been "violently arrested".

Wine's charisma and music steeped in anti-government messaging has attracted a muscular response from Kampala, which has charged him with treason and repeatedly shut down his rowdy concerts that double as political rallies.

He announced the move at his home in Magere, Kasangati Sub-county in Wakiso District in the afternoon shortly after police had blocked him in the morning from reaching his One Love Beach in Busabala and bundled him into a police vehicle and dumped him at his residence.

Before the concert, Wine, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, was removed by police from a vehicle near the beach, the footage showed.

"I wanted to tell the world what next and that is what the police didn't want to hear".

Harper didn't say much to Carlson as he walked to the dugout after the call, but he apparently kept yelling from the bench. Harper struck out swinging his first time up, then was called out on strikes by Mark Carlson to begin the fourth.

Tension ensued in Busabala yesterday after police blocked Bobi Wine's procession to the artiste's One Love Beach.

The police and military are said to have blocked his convoy and whisked him away to an unknown destination.

He told the media at his home in Magere that he would write a letter and personally deliver it to the police to notify them about his planned peaceful public demonstrations countrywide.

"This serves to inform you that despite the elaborate and clear guidelines well stipulated in our correspondences and the previous meetings we have had regarding the preparations for, the manner, the conduct, the characterises and security demands from your side, the previous concerns have fallen short of agreed upon positions in line with lawfulness, safety and security", Mr Mugenyi's letter also copied to Abtex Promotions, the organisers; Kampala Metropolitan Police Commander and all regional police commanders reads in part. I will walk there and wait for my response from them. Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, alias Bobi Wine has been arrested.

The statement comes after Ugandan police said it had placed MP Bobi Wine under house arrest arrest after he warned the government his opposition movement would not be cowed into silence.

The police spokesman said Wine was driven by police back to his home in Kampala's northern outskirts.
