Twitter profit rises as Trump demands 'fairer' social media

"They discussed Twitter's commitment to protecting the health of their public conversation ahead of the 2020 USA elections and efforts underway to respond to the opioid crisis".

As of Tuesday morning, Trump had 59.9 million Twitter followers, making him the 13th most-tracked user on the social media network behind individuals including former President Barack Obama and singers Katy Perry and Taylor Swift.

Unlike other major USA tech company executives, Mr Dorsey had not previously met with Mr Trump.

Twitter is not the world's most popular social networking service, but one number considered essential for the prosperity of the San Francisco-based company continues to grow at a healthy pace, which should keep investors relatively happy for the foreseeable future.

Trump earlier on Tuesday had groused about Twitter in a tweet.

Trump has been upset about losing followers.

While Twitter was able to attract more people to its site, one prolific tweeter found reason to grouse. Wall Street analysts on average expected revenue of $775.2 million and adjusted EPS of 15 cents.

Reuters reported in 2016 Mr Trump had been angry with Twitter because it had rejected an advertising deal with his campaign. Very discriminatory, hard for people to sign on. Dorsey said the company is "now removing 2.5x more Tweets that share personal information, and ~38% of abusive Tweets that are taken down every week are being proactively detected by machine learning models".

Moscow denies that Russian officials attempted to sway United States voters in the 2016 election, saying the allegations were made up to excuse the election loss of Trump's opponent as well as deflect public attention from actual instances of election fraud and corruption. Trump lost 204,000, or 0.4 percent, of his 53.4 million followers in July, according to social media data firm Keyhole, when Twitter started its purge of suspicious accounts after it and other social media services were used in misinformation campaigns attempting to influence voters in the 2016 USA presidential race and other elections.

Twitter's quarterly revenue topped analyst expectations. Apparently, and unsurprisingly, a "significant portion of the meeting focused on Trump's concerns that Twitter quietly, and deliberately, has limited or removed some of his followers".

Over the course of a year ago the platform's monthly users fell from 336 million to 321 million, which Twitter said was due to a purge of abusive and fake accounts.

In a series of tweets earlier in the day, Trump said it was "so true" that he was the best thing to happen to the company, but that Twitter doesn't "treat me well as a Republican".

Trump during the campaign publicly hailed the site WikiLeaks for releasing hacked emails related to Clinton, but more recently has said he knew nothing about it.
