Four more cases have been confirmed in the region, bringing the total number to 10.

In 2014 there were 667 cases reported for the entire year in the United States. The New York City Health Department noted that there have been 359 confirmed measles cases in Brooklyn and Queens from October 2018, to April 18, 2019.

That puts this year's outbreak within 42 cases of breaking the record set in 2014 - which puts this year on track to be the worst for measles since the year 2000, when the disease was declared eradicated in the United States.

In an effort to reinforce the safety and efficacy of the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine, Peter Marks, MD, PhD, director of US Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, issued a statement on April 22, 2019.

According to the most recent data, measles outbreaks, which are defined as 3 or more cases, are ongoing in Rockland County, New York; New York City, New York; Butte County, California; Washington state; New Jersey; and MI.

Symptoms usually appear 10-12 days after exposure but may appear as early as seven days and as late as 21 days after exposure.

Infants under one year of age, pregnant women and people with weakened immune systems can get very ill with measles. "After just one dose of MMR vaccine about 95 per cent of people will be protected from measles, and 99 per cent of people who have had both MMR doses will be protected from measles", Shoemack said.

After dozens of newly confirmed measles cases, the U.S.is growing closer to record number this year. While that number is likely to increase, Dr. Lim advises anyone concerned to consult with a doctor, especially adults in the high-risk population who travel internationally, work with the elderly, in health care or with children.

All other persons should locate written verification they have received 2 doses of measles immunization in their life. Symptoms include fever, runny nose, cough and rash. For every 1,000 children who get the disease, the CDC estimated one or two will die from it.

Measles is a preventable virus, but health officials say it is highly contagious.

Of the 626 cases, 487 are in people 19 and younger.
