Saudi Arabia: Security Forces Foil Attack on Security Facility

The Sunni extremist group has claimed previous attacks in Saudi Arabia, targeting mostly security forces and members of the Shiite community who they view as heretics.

Four heavily armed attackers were killed on Sunday in a "failed terrorist attack" on an interior ministry building in Saudi Arabia's Zulfi, north of Riyadh, reported the Arab News.

Saudi Press Agency, quoting a state security spokesman, said the arrests were part of an investigation by authorities into "terrorist" activities. Although they could not be verified, they depicted a vehicle at a checkpoint with its doors open and two dead bodies lying on the ground near it. Inside the vehicle another corpse can be seen. Gunshots can be heard in one video purportedly from the scene.

ISIL claimed responsibility for the attack through its Amaq website.

The attackers carried machine guns, bombs, and Molotov cocktails, and were identified as Saudi militants who belonged to the Islamic State, Al Arabiya reported.

According to SPA, the identities of the four gunmen are still being determined by government authorities.

The kingdom has suffered numerous attacks in recent years by extremists, including Al Qaeda and ISIS.

In July of previous year, Daesh claimed an attack on a security checkpoint in the central al-Qassim region, in which a policeman and a foreign resident were killed.

It has also seen clashes between Shiite militants and security forces in the eastern provinces.
