Florida residents urged to get vaccinated after measles case

These include a local outbreak of four confirmed measles cases linked to one another after worldwide travel and an additional single case of measles after global travel.

WESTLAKE, Ohio- In just a matter of weeks the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates the USA will hit a new record of measles cases.

The current number of cases is the second-highest reported in the USA since the disease was eliminated in 2000, and just shy by 41 cases in matching the record since that time of 667 cases in 2014.

Measles, a disease that can be prevented via two doses of a vaccation, has seen a resurgence around the world, including in nations where vaccination levels are high.

Of the 71 new cases, all but three were reported in New York - 53 in New York City and 15 in nearby Rockland County.

IT IS HEREBY ORDERED that any person who lives, works or resides within the 11205, 11206, 11221 and/or 11249 zip codes and who has not received the MMR vaccine within forty eight (48) hours of this Order being signed by me shall be vaccinated against measles unless such person can demonstrate immunity to the disease or document to the satisfaction of the Department that he or she should be medically exempt from this requirement.

Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service has confirmed a local resident has contracted measles.

People who are known to have been in close proximity to the person have been contacted and provided with public health advice.

Just four months into the year, the number of cases is only 42 away from surpassing the record of 667 cases in 2014, the highest number since the illness was declared eliminated in the United States in 2000.

People born before January 1, 1969 are considered to be immune because measles used to be very common, and so this age group does not need the measles immunisations. The majority of the cases were unvaccinated.

People who are infected can infect others around them before they know they are infected and up to four days before a rash begins to develop.

Japan had also been experiencing one of its worst measles outbreaks in a decade, with at least 167 new patients reported in 20 prefectures from the beginning of 2019 to February.

It typically takes seven to 21 days after exposure for symptoms to occur, he added.
