Trump to make first state visit to United Kingdom in June

In addition to meeting the Queen, the president will participate in a bilateral meeting with prime minister Theresa May.

Trump's previous trip to the United Kingdom in July 2018 was billed as a working visit, rather than a state occasion, which is a formal visit by a head of state at the invitation of the Queen, who acts on advice from the government. The current president will visit from June 3 to 5.

Her government wants a lucrative post-Brexit trade deal with the USA and sees Trump, who has promised one, as a useful vehicle to achieve that. "And she's prepared to throw a lifeline to this bad president to get it".

The relationship with Macron, on the other hand, hit a high previous year when the Frenchman visited the White House and was warmly embraced by the president ("He is flawless", Trump told the press).

"I'd really hope his visit will become a magnet for all those who want radical climate action to be undertaken, because Trump, after all, is a symbol of climate change denial globally-one of the reasons we see him as one of the most unsafe men in the world at this time", Dearden said.

However, there was no mention of Mr Trump visiting Ireland in the White House statement announcing the United Kingdom visit.

Theresa May said the state visit would provide an "opportunity to strengthen our already close relationship" with the US.

And the president and first lady are also scheduled to attend a ceremony to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of D-Day, making a stop in Portsmouth - a main launch site for the World War II offensive that led to the liberation of Europe.

"The UK and United States have a deep and enduring partnership that is rooted in our common history and shared interests", she said.

The queen has met almost every one of the last 12 American presidents since the 1950s.

The US president's upcoming trip comes amid political turmoil.

State visits by foreign heads of government often involve a banquet with the Royal Family at Buckingham Palace or another Royal household, and an address to the Houses of Parliament. "All those that value peace and hope for a better world for the many must take to the streets and say clearly that Donald Trump is not welcome here!"

The June D-Day anniversary date was first made public earlier in the year, when the Sunday Times quoted sources who said it would be made official in April.

This article was updated with information confirming the invitation to a state visit.
