Not long after Tesla's robo-taxis are operational, Musk also predicts the firm will eliminate the steering wheel and pedals from its vehicles by 2021.

'I think there'll be a transition period, where people will be able to take over from the Robotaxi, ' Musk said.

At last year's second quarter earnings call, Musk confirmed that Tesla had a cat in the bag; a neural network that it had been developing under the guidance of former Apple hardware architect Peter Bannon.

To prove his sceptics wrong, Mr Musk will have to persuade regulators that Tesla's technology for transforming potentially hundreds of thousands of electric cars into self-driving vehicles will produce robots that are safer and more reliable than humans.

Investors appeared unmoved by the chip announcement but shares rose slightly in after-hour trading following the announcement of the robotaxis. But unlike its competitors, Tesla's cabs won't have a driver inside.

But Musk trashed Lidar on Monday, calling it a "fool's errand".

Benzema scores hat trick for Madrid in 3-0 win over Athletic
The former Lyon forward has now scored each of Madrid's last eight goals, taking him to 30 in all competitions for 2018-19. Chelsea are undergoing a odd season under Maurizio Sarri, but Champions League qualification is the minimum requirement.

With that being said, Musk claims that Tesla is already working on a next-generation of the chip and that the new chip is expected to be three times better than the current chip.

Critics have said that Tesla's heavy reliance on camera-based systems won't work in poor weather.

More than $1 billion in corporate and private investment has been plowed into some 50 Lidar startups over the past three years, including a record $420 million in 2018, according to a Reuters analysis of publicly available investment data in March.

Musk predicted that the technology for fully self-driving Tesla will roll out at some point from April to June next year. He said it was improbable but true that Tesla had designed the industry's best self-driving chip, saying Tesla's was dedicated for autonomous driving, while others, like Nvidia Corp, developed chips that could do other things as well. But most other states don't have the same requirements as California, where Tesla would need a state permit and have to prove the cars can drive safely on public roads without a human driver.

At the time, Musk said the Tesla AI chip would be able to process 100 times more frames than handled by the Nvidia GPU now in use by Tesla cars.

"Claims about (Tesla's) driving automation systems and safety are not backed up by the data, and it seems today's presentations had more to do with investors than consumers' safety", wrote the publication. But in this video, the Model 3 is driving on all sorts of roads, making turns and stopping at traffic lights - all by itself.
