Zelenskiy told reporters he would "reboot" peace talks with the separatists, with an eye toward a ceasefire, the BBC reported.

Declaring victory at his campaign headquarters to emotional supporters, Zelensky promised he would not let the Ukrainian people down.

"I think that we will have personnel changes".

Free elections and peaceful change of power = strong Ukrainian democracy.

French President Emmanuel Macron and Poland's President Andrzej Duda both congratulated Mr Zelensky in phone calls.

"You will now truly be the Servant of the People", said British foreign minister Jeremy Hunt on Twitter, pledging London's support.

And European Council President Donald Tusk tweeted: "A decisive day for Ukraine".

Viktor Medvedchuk, the Kremlin's closest ally in Ukraine, last week outlined ways in which Ukraine and Russian Federation could mend ties, though Mr. Zelenskiy has given no indication of being open to the prospect.

Poroshenko conceded defeat soon after the publication of the exit polls, Reuters reported.

Sparkling wine was on offer at his campaign headquarters, as the star's team prepared to toast his victory on Palm Sunday, a week before Orthodox Easter.

He also appealed to the global community to help safeguard Ukraine's pro-Western course.

Zelenskiy said after a poll of voters in a runoff election Sunday suggested his overwhelming victory that his apparent win could be a model for other ex-Soviet states that want to move beyond ossified politics.

Observers say Ukraine's new leader may seek to use his outsider status to try to improve ties with Moscow.

Hurricane Michael upgraded to rare Category 5 storm at time of landfall
It's only the forth of its kind on record for the USA , including the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935 and Hurricane Camille in 1969. The agency's analysis found that Michael had wind speeds of 160 miles per hour when it made landfall on October 10, 2018.

In comments to the press, Zelenskiy said he would "do everything possible" to end hostilities with pro-Russian separatists in the country's Donbass region, which has left thousands dead.

The result appears to be a massive protest vote.

The incumbent, Petro Poroshenko, has it all to do.

Voter turnout in the second round was 62.07 percent, the commission said. "Well, at first it can be a bit amusing, and then it might hurt afterwards", he said after casting his ballot.

Poroshenko calls Zelenskiy a "puppet" of Kolomoisky and the comedian has been forced to fend off suggestions he might help Kolomoisky win compensation or regain ownership of PrivatBank, Ukraine's largest lender, which was nationalised in 2016.

Mr Bakanov told The Times they were warmly received in the U.S. but officials "made it clear that global support would be contingent on us fighting corruption".

Earlier on Sunday, Poroshenko had warned Ukrainians against taking a chance on Zelensky "because this is not funny".

Poroshenko supporters credit him with rebuilding the army and securing an Orthodox Church independent of Russian Federation.

But many feel the country's ruling elite have forgotten the promises of the revolution.

The father of two from the industrial city of Krivy Rig in central Ukraine has shunned campaign rallies in favour of comedy shows, and prefers to get his message across through YouTube clips and social media updates.

He'll also have to face off against Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has ruled his country for almost two decades, if he wants to mend relations with Ukraine's powerful, controversial neighbor.

The poll conducted by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology and the Razumkov Center public opinion organization was based on more than 13,000 responses to face-to-face questions at 300 polling places, two hours before the polls closed.
