Sharks Take Game 5, Stave Off Elimination

San Jose Sharks goaltender Martin Jones produced a stunning performance on Thursday night, making more than 30 saves to help his team secure a series-saving victory over the Golden Knights.

"I know we have one more game, and come back for Game 7", Hertl said after the 5-2 victory over the Knights cut the series deficit to 3-2.

Hertl scored the first of his two goals just 76 seconds into the game, Jones delivered his biggest save to preserve the lead in the third period and the Sharks staved off elimination by beating the Golden Knights 5-2 in Game 5 of their first-round series Thursday night.

Joe Pavelski had a goal and an assist, as Logan Couture and Barclay Goodrow also scored goals for San Jose, which won for the first time in team playoff history when trailing 3-1 in a series.

The Golden Knights wrapped up three playoff series on the road previous year and will be looking for their first close-out victory at T-Mobile Arena, where they outscored San Jose 11-3 in Games 3 and 4.

Yesterday during practice Coach Pete DeBoer signaled that Martin Jones will be the Game 5 starter for Team Teal. Marc-Andre Fleury finished with 24 saves. Marchessault however would be called for a costly high-sticking penalty and San Jose jumped on the man-advantage.

If they can get strong contribution from their backend on the road in Game 6, expect a very winnable game at home in Game 7.

Vegas closed to 3-2 at 11:36 of the third period on a power-play goal by Marchessault, who fired a wrist shot from the top of the slot past a screen by Smith. Joe Pavelski would score an empty-net goal putting San Jose up 5-2.

Sporting Brent Burns, Erik Karlsson and Marc-Edouard Vlasic gives them a trio of defenders that combine to both put up offensive numbers but also insulate Martin Jones when it's needed.

San Jose then added an insurance goal when Goodrow got in front of Fleury and deflected Justin Braun's point shot in for his first career playoff goal.

The Golden Knights have gotten off to fast starts in each of their wins, scoring within the first 75 minutes.

The Golden Knights scored their first goal with 30 seconds left in the first to make it 2-1.

"It's great. It's a contribution that we as a group welcome on a nightly basis ... for them to score a goal there, at that point in the game too, it's good for our group."
Hertl has five goals and six assists over the last 10 games for San Jose.

Which team are they - the streaking winners, or the streaking losers? "Hertl was huge for us tonight", Jones said. "We have to match that and take it to another level".

"We're in a good place right now".

"He was outstanding in Game 1, so it's not like he hadn't played well in a month", coach Peter DeBoer said.
