Amazon and Google end spat, bring YouTube to Amazon devices

Both free services are live now - Amazon's just in the United States for now, but YouTube Music is in 16 countries globally. So what effect will today's news that YouTube Music is launching a "free, ad-supported experience" for Google Home speakers have? Amazon resumed selling the Chromecast in December of past year, but today's deal is strictly for services and doesn't apply to hardware.

Google has announced that its YouTube Music will be free for Google Home or other Google Assistant-powered speakers.

If you have any smart speaker in your house or office that has Google Assistant built-in, you will be able to start streaming music from YouTube Music.

The service is available in Ireland, the UK, US, Canada, Mexico, Australia, Germany, France, Italy, Spain and several other countries.

As Sigmund Freud might have said, "sometimes a cigar is just a cigar", Klingner said on Twitter. He did not directly answer a question on whether the weapon was a new capability.

Now, Prime Video will become broadly available across the Android TV partner ecosystem, and Prime Video app users will be able to stream from the Prime Video catalogue on Android TV, including Amazon's original programming and 4K videos, and access their Prime Video Channel subscriptions. Through products and platforms like Search, Maps, Gmail, Android, Google Play, Chrome and YouTube, Google plays a meaningful role in the daily lives of billions of people and has become one of the most widely-known companies in the world. Whilst you may be limited to what you can listen to, it's a good option for background music.

You don't get free reign of specific song and artist selections, then, and naturally you'll have to bear with ads. And soon, based on those reports, Amazon's Echo will have its own free, ad-supported tier too.

In the end, consumers will be benefitting from the decisions made by Google and Amazon. According to research firm Strategy Analytics, 86.2m smart speakers were shipped in 2018, with Amazon accounting for 29.7m of them and Google another 22.3m.

The decision to make Amazon Music free for Alexa users is no doubt in response to Spotify, Pandora, and other music streaming services offering a free version. This is further competition for Apple Music and Spotify, who are battling it out in the paid music subscription business.
