World renowned paranormal investigator Lorraine Warren has died, her family says.

Lorraine's son-in-law, Tony Spera also confirmed the news of her death in a Facebook statement, that read: "It is with deep sadness that I must announce that Lorraine Warren has passed away".

'Last night my grandmother, Lorraine Warren, quietly and peacefully left us to join her beloved Ed.

Along with her husband Ed Warren, the couple founded the New England Society For Psychic Research.

Ed Warren worked as a demonologist and Lorraine was a trance medium; they lived and operated in CT, but traveled to investigate supernatural phenomena.

In view of her 224,000 followers, she wrote: "My dear friend Lorraine Warren has passed".

Vera Farmiga, who plays Lorraine in the Conjuring movies, shared a heartfelt tribute for her "dear friend". "She was a remarkable, loving, compassionate and giving soul", he wrote.

In a surreal twist, the latest spinoff to The Conjuring, The Curse of La Llorona, opens in theaters today.

Her husband, Ed Warren, passed away in 2006 at the age of 79. Love you Lorraine. You're waltzing with Ed now, ' she added.

The family requests that you respect their privacy at this time. She said these gifts also gave her the ability to see deeper beauty in people by reading their auras.

Warren told The AP in a 2013 interview that she understood it was very hard for people to accept she could see ghosts if they had never seen one themselves. In the 2013 film The Conjuring, Lorraine Warren was a consultant to the production and made a cameo in the film. I was so blessed to have known her and am honored to portray her.

The Warrens maintain that the possession of farmer Maurice Theriault was frighteningly real, though his sister claimed it was a hoax.
