Eight Cup teams fail inspection at Richmond

Kevin Harvick won the pole for Saturday night's Cup Series race at Richmond Raceway.

"We did a great job today, I didn't think it was a flawless lap from my standpoint, but I was able to get in the throttle on the exit of the corner and put down a decent lap", Harvick said.

"I had no front turn (and) was just real, real tight that last run". Just had to hold him off. I just had to hold them off. Thanks to the pit crew-they had a great night.

Because he did, Truex gave Joe Gibbs Racing its sixth victory in nine races this season and won for the first time in his career on tracks shorter than a mile.

Truex had led since the race went back to green on lap 136 following a caution.

Erik Jones will start on the outside of the front row, with Kurt Busch and Joey Logano in the second row.

Two seconds behind Truex with 40 laps left, Bowyer quickly closed the deficit and made a move to the inside of Truex's No. 19 Toyota with 17 laps to go, but Truex protected the outside and kept enough momentum to keep Bowyer behind him.

The victory was No. 20 for Truex on his career and came in his 486th start in the series.

With inspections complete, the official second row of the Toyota Owners 400 starting grid includes Joey Logano and Kyle Busch, with Martin Truex Jr. and Austin Dillon in the third row. Also, he has a 27-point lead over Denny Hamlin and two wins in the driver standings. This time, however, Logano ran out of time to seal the deal and collect the trophy. Fun race, just gosh.

"If we can win three in a row here at Richmond and match names like that - the Godfathers of our sport that built our sport to what it is today - would be pretty cool", he said. "That's a little frustrating, but when you're frustrated with second, that's a good sign". Got a decent run off of (Turn) 2 on the last lap. and thought maybe could get to the outside.

When they all had new tires and enough fuel to finish, Truex was back in front, followed by Bowyer, Logano, Harvick and Hamlin. It's the fifth stage victory of the season for Busch, who is trying for his third straight victory on the 0.75-mile, D-shaped oval. Asked over his team radio if he was OK, Larson said, "Yeah". I think that's where our strength is and we've had some moments in some of these races that we've kind of been knocked off that we've been able to rebound and come back up through.

Eight cars failed prerace inspection, including three that failed twice.

Inspection issues continued for Elliott, Hamlin and Tifft, as their cars failed a second time through inspection.

As a result, NASCAR disqualified their qualifying speeds, sending them to the rear of the field, disallowed their pit stall selections and ejected one engineer from each team for the race.

Five other teams failed inspection and had their qualifying speeds and pit selection disallowed.
