Leicester City vs. Newcastle United - Football Match Report

Newcastle took a big step toward Premier League survival by winning 1-0 at Leicester on Friday, with Ayoze Perez scoring the first-half victor for Rafa Benitez's side.

Rodgers' charges were growing in the game after that but Schmeichel was not so lucky in the 32nd minute as Ayoze Perez's glancing header sailed to the far post after he was picked out by Matt Ritchie.

Salomon Rondon nearly gave Newcastle the lead midway through the first half with a ferocious 30-yard free-kick that cannoned back off the woodwork.

Right after the midway point, Perez failed to take a first-time shot 76 minutes in after squeezing into the area, leaving Kasper Schmeichel to collect comfortably.

Leicester's first chance of the second half should have been the equaliser as Jamie Vardy was one-on-one with Martin Dubravka, but the Foxes' top scorer blazed over the bar from five-yards out.

But Newcastle had a nervy finale and Javier Manquillo was fortunate not to concede a penalty when he appeared to tug Tielemans' arm in the box in the closing stages. This relationship between the players and fans means a lot to us.

Newcastle need reinforcements, but everything is up in the air at the moment because owner Mike Ashley is looking to sell the club for £400m, despite it being valued at £300m.

Leicester now finish the season with games against West Ham, Arsenal, Manchester City and Chelsea as they look to secure a seventh-place finish. It was one of those nights where it didn't quite come off for us. His seven tackles were more than anyone else on the pitch recorded.

Despite being put under pressure in the latter stages of the game, Newcastle held firm to claim the points.

But he's now gone nine games in a Newcastle shirt without a goal or assist and even the most die hard fan will know that his end product does have to sharpen up.

- Newcastle have won back-to-back league visits to Leicester in the top-flight for the first time since September 1959 under manager Charlie Mitten.

"Doing a little bit more - I'm not saying spending £200m - but doing a little bit more, doing the right things, we can compete with the teams between 7th and 12th, but we need to do things right".

It has been a long campaign for Newcastle.
