The idea to ship immigrants to Democratic strongholds was considered twice in recent months, but the White House and Department of Homeland Security said the plan had been rejected.

"This just shows the President's contempt for law, another instance of the President's contempt for law", Nadler said on CNN's "State of the Union" with Jake Tapper.

"CAIR was founded after 9/11", she added, "because they recognized that some people did something and that all of us were starting to lose access to our civil liberties".

Burien is a sanctuary city.

Immigration is Donald Trump's signature issue.

And Democrats have stated time and time again they support open borders, they support sanctuary cities. "Once this Pandora's box is opened, the ensuing tit-for-tat will do lasting damage to our nation", William S. Consovoy said in a letter to the Treasury's general counsel.

Sanders responded by repeating an irrelevant line from Trump, saying that as long as the President's taxes are supposedly under audit, he will not release his returns.

Sen. Ben Cardin (D-Md.) said Trump is not trying to find a solution to the immigration crisis but only of advancing a ploy to motivate his political base before the 2020 presidential elections. Pelosi said on Thursday that "there's room and there's a need" for more immigrants - but apparently not on her doorstep.

Mnuchin, who has consulted with the White House and Department of Justice about Trump's tax returns, said earlier this week that Neal's request raised concerns about the scope of the committee's authority, privacy protections for USA taxpayers and the legislative objective of lawmakers in seeking the documents.

The downside for the migrants would be a high cost of living. The agency also uses commercial flights but requires that migrants to pay for those. Mnuchin expressed a concern over releasing the returns because of the precedent it would set and the potential for this to be used for political attacks.

The Department of Health and Human Services said this week it had started scouting vacant properties that could be turned into facilities for holding migrant children in several cities, including Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, Phoenix, and San Antonio.

"The president likes the idea and Democrats have said they want these individuals in their communities so let's see if it works and everybody gets a win out of it", Sanders said. In response, some cities have banished ICE from jails where agents could easily pick up immigration violators. "The Chairman is giving us a new deadline".

In what is shaping up to be a bipartisan Capitol Hill standoff, Trump has declared that his tax documents "will never be handed over to Democrats", although laws covering the release of his returns unambiguously state that he is required to do so, if told to in writing.
