Minneapolis man held in Mall of America attack

A witness at the Bloomington mall told WCCO that a woman was screaming that someone threw her child from the third floor balcony.

One man told the New York Daily News he saw the immediate aftermath of the incident and that the child was lying " a pool of blood".

Bloomington Police Chief Jeffrey Potts said police don't think there is any relationship between the man and the family of the child, who suffered "significant injuries" and was taken to a hospital.

Police were called to the mall at 10:17 a.m. for a report of a child falling over a railing, but witnesses indicated the child had been "pushed or thrown", Potts said.

The 24-year-old suspect took off running after the incident, and assaulted an older man who tried to apprehend him, The Star Tribune reported.

The child's family is at the hospital.

"She was screaming 'Everyone pray, everyone pray".

Police said the suspect was quickly found inside the mall and brought in for questioning. Mall Security responded immediately as well as the Bloomington Police Department.

"Oh my God, my baby, someone threw him over the edge'".

No motive has been released, but investigators said they're looking at surveillance footage obtained from the mall. The family is now with the child, police said. A small portion of the mall is cordoned off on the first and third levels.

Police say the child is 5 years old.

Potts said, emphasizing that police believe this to be an 'isolated incident'.

Metro Transit stopped Blue Line light rail service in and out of the mall around 11 a.m. due to the police activity.
