Man Attempts to Light Jacket on Fire Outside the White House

The Secret Service said on Twitter: "ALERT: Secret Service personnel are responding to a police/medical incident on Pennsylvania Ave. along the @WhiteHouse North Fence Line". Pedestrian traffic on Pennsylvania Avenue was closed following the incident. Agents are reportedly now looking to see if the man left behind any suspicious packages.

Secret Service confirmed the incident, saying in a statement, "Today at approximately 3:15 p.m, a male individual operating an electronic wheelchair-type scooter lit his outer jacket on fire while sitting on Pennsylvania Avenue". Secret Service, the D.C. Fire department and medics all responded.

The man was transported to a local hospital with what appeared to be non-life-threatening injuries.

The event occurred as the President was conducting a 5G summit at the White House.

Chelsea and Liverpool have both condemned the incident , with Liverpool describing the chants as "dangerous and disturbing".

A nearby block of 17th Street was closed as well, and at least portions of the White House complex were locked down.

Jeremy Diamond of CNN wrote on Twitter: "Secret service spokeswoman tells me a man set his jacket on fire in front of the White House. They say there are also suspicious packages", Kristof said.

The White House was put on lockdown for less than an hour.
