Los Angeles Lakers, coach Luke Walton agree to part ways

Walton, who played for the franchise from 2003-2012, has been its head coach the past three seasons.

Earlier in the week, Magic Johnson stepped down from his role as team president.

ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reports that former Cleveland Cavaliers coach Tyronn Lue is a strong front-runner to replace Walton and that Philadelphia 76ers assistant coach Monty Williams joins Lue as the central candidates in the Lakers' search, according to league sources.

Sounds like a busy offseason is ahead for the Lakers, and not just in their courtship for star players.

The Lakers on Friday finally divorced their head coach, as had largely been expected following a messy, playoff-less season in Hollywood.

Chelsea and Liverpool have both condemned the incident , with Liverpool describing the chants as "dangerous and disturbing".

The Los Angeles Lakers and Luke Walton have mutually agreed to part ways.

National Basketball Association analysts and fans had been speculating all season that Walton could be on the way out, but after Magic Johnson "admonished" Walton back in November, the coach reportedly had the full backing of owner Jeanie Buss.

"We would like to thank Luke for his dedicated service", said Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka. The Lakers' front office will have a much different look next season.

Lonzo Ball planned to undergo a surgery unauthorized by the Los Angeles Lakers on his left ankle. "Obviously it was frustrating, the injuries, the inability to have a consistent lineup was frustrating and hard for them".

"Want to thank Luke and the rest of the coaching staff for allowing me to be me from day 1", forward Kyle Kuzma tweeted.
