Young star Leclerc eyes victory in F1's 1,000th race

The tally being celebrated includes 11 editions of the Indianapolis 500, as well as races run to Formula Two regulations.

Vettel spun while running in a promising position at the Bahrain Grand Prix, a weekend which saw him unable to match the pace of impressive young teammate Charles Leclerc. Rubens Barrichello has completed in an all-time record 322 Grands Prix.

However in his decision to move, it looked as though he would undoubtably be Renault's number one driver, but Nico Hulkenberg has ensured this isn't the case as he has been the quickest of the two so far this season. Defending champion Lewis Hamilton is closing in on Schumacher's all-time mark after winning his fifth world title previous year at the age of 34 to edge ahead of great rival Sebastian Vettel, who won four championships with Red Bull before moving to Ferrari.

"I think it's a nice track", enthused the Alfa Romeo driver.

Sebastian Vettel, who now drives for Scuderia Ferrari, sits in third place on this list with 52 career victories.

The 31-year-old German's errors helped hand the title to Hamilton last season and by his high standards Vettel has had an indifferent start to this campaign. The Brit is the only driver to have won the race more than twice. Under half of these 33 champions have won at least two championships, as only 16 of them have done so.

Already 22 points behind championship leader Valtteri Bottas, Vettel is in full knowledge that he must overcome the error and win in China to not only cut the gap, but remind Leclerc who the World Champion at Ferrari is. It was Argentine great Juan Manuel Fangio who dominated the opening decade with five world championships in seven seasons from 1951.

"Monza when I lost (Austrian) Jochen Rindt, when he got killed (in 1970 and became the only posthumous world champion)". A total of 15 teams have combined to win the 61 constructor championships that have been decided.

Ferrari have the quicker auto and a strong pairing in Leclerc and four-time champion Sebastian Vettel, even if the latter is facing doubts over his form.

Add to this the fact that ambient temperatures are set to be cool this weekend, many teams will struggle with graining and it could be a multiple stopper, adding more to the excitement of what is bound to be another fascinating race weekend.

85 - If Hamilton starts the race at the front of the grid, the world champion will have secured as many poles as the rest of the drivers have managed between them (85).

Be sure to tune in to the live broadcast of the 1,000th Formula 1 race at 2:05 a.m. ET this Sunday, April 14. Given that Mercedes have won 4 of the last 5 outings at Shanghai International Circuit, that could certainly represent some fantastic value given the above doubts around the Ferrari pair.
