Diego Costa 'handed EIGHT game ban for referee outburst'

Atletico Madrid striker Diego Costa has been suspended for eight games for allegedly insulting a referee, meaning he will not play the rest of the season.

The Spanish Football Federation met on Wednesday to discuss what punishment to hand out and have decided that Costa must sit out eight La Liga fixtures.

If the suspension is not appealed, the Spanish worldwide will miss the rest of the season as Atletico only have seven La Liga fixtures remaining.

"It's bad news", Cerezo said on Thursday.

"It's a shame because every player has a different temperament on the pitch".

Bahrain I think the conditions were tricky and everyone was struggling with the wind and so on. "It's sheer power. So we have to get used to this level of performance, in my opinion, and see Melbourne as the outlier".

In addition to the ban imposed on him, Costa will also be fined a sum of £5200 for his misconduct.

It was confifmed in referee Gil Manzano's match report that the Atlético Madrid striker unleashed a barrage of abuse on Manzano after a decision went Barça's way, repeatedly shouting "Me cago en tu puta madre", which literally translates to "I shit on your whore mother".

Atletico signed Alvaro Morata on loan from Chelsea in January and the 26-year-old is now likely to be given an extended run in the starting line-up.

After Atletico's loss to Barca, Simeone said: "I asked the referee and he told me Costa said something to him".

"If Costa really said what the referee claims he did, then he was correctly sent off, but we must be doing something wrong as we have had seven players sent off in 11 games".
