Marcus Smart Diagnosed With Torn Oblique, To Miss 4-6 Weeks

Just days before the Celtics are set to host IN in Game 1 of a first-round series, the news struck a damaging blow to Boston's postseason chances.

Per ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, Celtics" guard Marcus Smart suffered a torn oblique and "could be sidelined for the first two rounds of the playoffs'.

The Celtics were in a similar position a season ago when they went the first four games of the 2018 Playoffs without their defensive-minded guard.

Smart sustained the injury in a game against the Orlando Magic on Sunday, and he did not play Tuesday at the Washington Wizards. Trying to crash down into the paint on defense, Smart collided with Magic big man Nikola Vucevic and immediately crumpled to the ground in pain. In 80 appearances and 60 starts this season, Smart averaged 8.9 points and 4.0 rebounds per game on 42.2 percent from the field and 36.4 percent from beyond the arc.

Smart was doing what he does best, sacrificing his body for a loose ball, before falling directly on his hip.

Brown looked out of sorts early in the season as he tried to adjust to the reintroduction of both Kyrie Irving and Gordon Hayward to the mix in Boston, but Brown has thrived over the past few months coming off the bench.

"I really hope Marcus finally gets recognized as an All-Defensive team member", Stevens said in March.
