Texas Tech Basketball Roster & Starting Lineup vs. Virginia

- Texas Tech and Virginia squared off for the NCAA basketball championship Monday night at U.S. Bank Stadium, and of all things to cause a stoppage in the game, it was a tortilla. Virginia, which had been the first No. 1 seed to lose to a 16-seed when it fell last season to Maryland-Baltimore County, completed its redemption tour. It was a heartbreaking loss for Texas Tech who no one believed would make it all the way to the final.

Hunter, who scored 22 of his game-high 27 points after halftime and made a crucial 3-pointer in the final minute of regulation to tie the game, knocked down another 3-pointer with 2:09 left in overtime to put the Cavaliers ahead 75-73 - a lead it wouldn't relinquish. Virginia's Jerome had a great all-around game Saturday against Auburn with 21 points, nine rebounds, six assists - all team highs.

Guy also had 24 points for the first-time champions - enough to see him voted the Final Four's most outstanding player after his crucial foul shots sent Virginia to the national title game.

Down by three points in regulation with less than 20 seconds to go, the Cavaliers needed a three to tie the game.

It's the first NCAA Championship for the Cavaliers, and they had to work for all of it. Texas Tech kept coming and coming, closing gap after gap until they forced an overtime before the Cavaliers settled it with their impeccable free throw shooting. "Our coaches told us, we were going to face adversity all year".

Virginia coach Tony Bennett credited Hunter for a "great" two-way performance, saying that the guard "saved his best for last" despite struggling to find his shot in the first half. However, guard Kyle Guy - the team's leading scorer - went on to score 6 points, giving the team a 1 point victory against Auburn.

Texas Tech was led by 17 points off the bench for Brandone Francis.

Up next in the competition will be a trip to Old Trafford to face Manchester United in the first leg of the quarterfinals on Wednesday.

More than 2:30 after initiating replay, officials reversed the call on the floor and awarded the ball to Virginia. "To be able to hug each other with confetti going everywhere and say we did it, it's the greatest feeling I've ever felt in basketball". To decide that was a more significant factor for possession than Hunter's action in poking the ball away violated the spirit, if not the letter, of basketball law.

"That's what he does: he shoots the crap out of the ball", said teammate Ty Jerome, who penetrated to zip a one-handed pass to the far corner to set up one of Guy's second-half 3s. "So much poise, and just have a lot of respect for them".

But Texas Tech was not going away easily.

It was just one way the UMBC question had dogged Guy and the Cavaliers. And just like the first half, the Red Raiders caught up.

A 39.3 percent from the field before Monday night, he cashed in on just 22.7 percent of his attempts against Virginia.

"This is real life; we'll bounce back", Tech coach Chris Beard said.

Later, Kyle Guy came back with another 3-pointer, giving Virginia an impressive 53-43 lead. "I guess you can root for the original incorrect call to stand, for game flow purposes, but it's an odd hill to die on".
