No-deal Brexit 'simply insane — European Union commissioner

Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte, however, said May would have to convince European Union leaders that Britain would continue "sincere co-operation" with the bloc if granted a delay.

Having failed three times to get her withdrawal deal through parliament, May has been locked in talks with Labour to find a modified plan that could command a majority, causing anger within her own party.

May is therefore going to touch upon Brexit in her talks with Macron and Merkel.

The government also reportedly suggested offering Labour a guarantee that any deal they reached could not be undone by the next Conservative leader, creating a "lock".

Any compromise with Labour on customs arrangements or to allow a free vote on a second referendum is likely to further enrage Tory Brexiters, though some have turned their fire on the Eurosceptics who have held out from backing the prime minister's deal.

May's Conservative government and the main opposition Labour Party were clinging to hope of finding a compromise Brexit deal, two days before European Union leaders decide whether to grant an extension to the U.K.'s departure from the bloc.

The government opposed the bill, saying it was unnecessary as Mrs May was already seeking an extension. "We are of course considering an extension, also a longer extension, but it must be linked to very strict criteria", he added, insisting that Britain can't speculate about not participating in the May 23-26 elections for the European Parliament.

The PM will hold talks with the German Chancellor and French President later, four days before the United Kingdom is due to leave the EU.

She has asked for a delay until June 30, but the decision has to be taken unanimously by Britain and the remaining 27 European Union members.

Seibert would not further comment on the German government's position regarding May's Friday proposal to delay Brexit until June 30 to avoid crashing out without a deal at the end of this week.

A deal on an extension is expected to be agreed when European leaders gather in Brussels tomorrow evening. He said Germany wanted ties with Britain to be as close and friendly as possible after Brexit.

This is also the final date for the United Kingdom to take steps to enable European Parliament elections to take place on May 23.

Mrs May has asked for a new delay until June 30 but, according to reports, Brexit could be delayed by almost a year under plans being considered by European Union officials.

"We are prepared to talk and put forward our view, but talks have to mean a movement and so far there has been no change in those red lines".

But BBC political editor Laura Kuenssberg said there was "deep concern" on the Labour side that any legal promise could be undone in the future.

If no compromise can be reached between the parties, Mrs May has committed to putting a series of Brexit options to the Commons and being bound by the result.

May is set to visit Paris and Berlin on Tuesday in a bid to convince Emmanuel Macron and Angela Merkel to agree to her request for an extension.

Merriman has said he expects to be sacked for speaking at the People's Vote rally.
