Kirstjen Nielsen Resigns As Secretary Of Homeland Security

Border Patrol estimates put the number of migrants passing through Mexico at over 100,000 in March, most from El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala: the highest monthly figure in almost a decade, according to Nielsen.

McAleenan follows Nielsen and Elaine Duke, who led the DHS on an acting basis after John Kelly, Trump's first DHS secretary, became White House chief of staff in 2017.

Her departure marks the end of a tortured relationship with Donald Trump, who reportedly blamed her for a recent surge in the number of migrants crossing the southern border and felt she wasn't tough enough to implement his crackdown.

None of this, however, seems to have been enough for Trump, whose ever hardening push against illegal immigration has left no room for the 46-year-old, an old hand of the administration who signed on at the start of the real-estate tycoon's presidency.

Mr Trump has recently threatened to shut the crossing, but has since backtracked and promised to give Mexico a year to stop illegal drugs and migrants crossing into the US.

Her resignation comes at a time when President Donald Trump is angry over the number of Central Americans crossing the US border from Mexico.

The personnel shake-ups were seen by observers as a signal the president wants to tack an even harder line.

On Thursday, the USA president unexpectedly withdrew his nomination for the head of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), citing an aim to pursue a "tougher stance".

"I have confidence that Kevin will do a great job", Trump said.

"I think what's more important is that our members of Congress, they're going to have to work with the secretary, be it acting or permanent, they're going to have to work closely with our secretary to make sure that we can solve this mess and that includes providing the resources that our agents need to be able to solve this security crisis". "We have taken unprecedented action to protect Americans".

Trump announced on Sunday that U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Kevin McAleenan will be acting head of Homeland Security.

Since taking on the role in December 2017, the U.S. attorney has overseen the implementation of Mr Trump's controversial border control policies.

When asked what he thought about Nielsen in the role of Homeland Security Secretary, Garza said, "She tried her best".

"Nielsen will go down in history as presiding over an exceptionally cruel regime that separated families and violated human rights", Jayapal said. In all, this declaration paves the way for the U.S. president to acquire about $8 billion on the construction of the 376.5 kilometers long (234 miles) wall on the border with its southern neighbor.

McAleenan has helped shape numerous Trump administration's policies on immigration.

"I did not hear that word used", she told a congressional hearing.
