Trump just a blowhard on windmills, lawmakers say of 'idiotic' comments

"And they say the noise causes cancer." - remarks at Republican fundraising dinner Tuesday.

Members of Trump's own party have ridiculed him for the remarks, with one prominent Republican also labeling the concept "idiotic".

Connecting the noise from wind power turbines with cancer wasn't the only dubious claim the president made Tuesday about the alternative energy source. Asked Wednesday whether Americans should be anxious about such a risk, White House spokeswoman Mercedes Schlapp was unable to explain the president's remarks.

Sen. Chuck Grassley said in a conference call with reporters Wednesday that the comments "were first of all idiotic, and it doesn't show much respect for Chuck Grassley as the grandfather of the wind energy tax credit".

"I am not thrilled", Trump said at the time.

Donald Trump and a wind farm. In February, a Scottish court ruled that Trump International Golf Club Scotland Ltd. should pay legal costs incurred by the Scottish government during a years-long legal battle with the Trump club, which unsuccessfully sued to halt the wind farm project.

Grassley says the president was probably speaking "off-the-cuff" when he suggested property values decline when wind mills are erected nearby and the noise causes cancer. Iowa's Republican Governor Kim Reynolds said it "wasn't her place" to decided whether wind turbines cause cancer, telling the Des Moines Register, "you know how those things change, one year, coffee's good for you".

But researchers have said otherwise.

Researchers who have studied the issue have found no evidence that wind turbines directly cause any physical illness.

A staunch supporter of the coal industry, Trump has taken to cracking jokes at his rallies about wind power, which accounted for some six per cent of U.S. energy generation in 2016, according to the Energy Department.
