Suspected poacher killed by elephant and eaten by lions in South Africa

A suspected rhino poacher was trampled by an elephant and then eaten by lions at a South African national park.

A search party immediately sprung into action, although after an intensive search, only a skull and a pair of pants was found, with the rest of the poacher's remains believed to have been consumed by the lions.

A spokesperson for South African National Parks said that they were assisted by an airwing to search for his remains.

Kruger Park Rangers began searching for the man's body on Tuesday evening, sending a helicopter to scan the area known as Crocodile Bridge, but had no luck finding him.

"Indications found at the scene suggested that a pride of lions had devoured the remains leaving only a human skull and a pair of trousers", a national parks statement said.

According to reports at the time of the incident, the men were trying to hunt an endangered rhino.

The three other poachers carried the man's body to the side of the road before fleeing the scene.

Two 375 hunting rifles and ammunition were seized after their arrest.

"The suspects appeared yesterday, 05 April 2019, at the Komatipoort Magistrate's Court facing charges of possession of firearms and ammunition without a licence, conspiracy to poach as well as trespassing".

Reacting to the incident, the managing executive of the KNP, Glenn Phillips, commended those who formed part of the search party for helping the family find closure.

The three will remain in custody until their next appearance in the same court on April 12, pending a formal bail application.
